Apple nutzt Sonnenenergie für sein iCloud Rechenzentrum

Nach Angaben des Charlotte Observer nutzt Apple verstärkt Sonnenenergie um sein iCloud Rechenzentrum in Maiden, North Carolina zu betreiben.

So habe das County in dem das Rechenzentrum steht, Apple erlaubt, auf einer Fläche von 171 Hektar ein Solarkraftwerk auf der gegenüberliegenden Straßenseite des Rechenzentrums zu errichten. Eine Stellungnahme von Apple gibt es derzeit nicht. Aber die Investitionen in erneuerbare Energien zeigen eine deutliche Wende des Unternehmens, um damit ebenfalls auf die Kritik von Umweltschützern zu reagieren, die Apple für den nicht vorbildlichen Umgang mit Energie angreifen. Zudem hängt das Unternehmen den restlichen großen Cloud Anbietern, allen voran Google, hinterher, grün zu werden.

Greenpeace hob das neuen Apple-Rechenzentrum in seinem Bericht How Dirty Is Your Data? besonders hervor. Der Bericht, der im April veröffentlicht wurde, lenkte die Aufmerksamkeit auf die ökologischen Schäden, die durch Cloud Computing entstehen sollen. Denn Apple und andere große Cloud Anbieter wurden anscheinend mit dem Versprechen nach North Carolina gelockt, dort billig Strom nutzen zu können.
